Coal City, IL – A wanted Iowa man was arrested Thursday morning after allegedly using a stolen garbage can for shelter while evading police in a wooded area of Grundy County.
According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, Robert Shelton White, 53, of Iowa, was taken into custody following a coordinated search near Richards Crossing, north of Spring Road. The search was launched after White and a female accomplice reportedly fled a stolen vehicle the previous night during a police pursuit.
Deputies were first alerted to the stolen vehicle around 7 p.m. Wednesday after it was detected by a license plate reader near Lorenzo Road and I-55. Officers attempted a traffic stop near a gas station, but the vehicle fled through Grundy County and into Coal City. The suspects later abandoned the vehicle in a wooded area on South 1st Avenue.
Video surveillance provided by a local resident showed two individuals taking a garbage can from a home around 2 a.m. Thursday. Authorities believed the suspects used the can to shield themselves from the cold while hiding nearby. Deputies resumed the search in the wooded area later that morning and discovered the suspects near a tipped-over garbage can around 10:40 a.m.
White, who has an active warrant out of Council Bluffs, Iowa for vehicle theft and is a registered sex offender, was taken into custody and is being held in Grundy County Jail pending extradition. His alleged accomplice, Katelyn Elaine Boren, 26, also of Iowa, was issued a notice to appear for obstructing a peace officer and released.
