Walton, IN – Firefighters from multiple Cass County departments battled a late-night blaze Saturday after smoke was spotted rising from a commercial building in Walton.

According to the Walton Community Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 10:00 p.m. on November 1 to the 5XX block of North Main Street for a reported structure fire. Units from New Waverly and Galveston Fire Departments also responded to assist.

Fire Chief Brayden Shedron said a single-story commercial structure was found with smoke coming from the roof. The business was closed at the time, and firefighters quickly launched an interior attack through the rear door, locating flames in the back of the building.

Personnel worked to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading into the attic space. No injuries were reported. Crews remained on the scene for several hours conducting overhaul operations and assisting the State Fire Marshal’s Office, which is investigating the cause.

Officials said no foul play is suspected, though the exact cause of the fire has not been determined. Assisting agencies included Cass County EMS, Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Cass County Emergency Management Agency, and Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office.

Residents with information about the incident are asked to contact the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
