Wakefield, Virginia – A brief period of light snow could develop this evening into tonight across far southern and southeastern Virginia, with the greatest chance for minor travel issues near the North Carolina border as temperatures dip below freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, light snow is expected mainly across southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. While most locations will see less than an inch of accumulation, a narrow band about 25 miles wide could produce totals close to one inch from the Virginia–North Carolina line northward toward Elizabeth City and nearby communities.
The snow is expected to develop this evening and continue into early Thursday morning. Forecasters stress that confidence remains lower than usual with this system, but even brief snowfall could accumulate on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses as temperatures fall overnight.
Areas most likely to see impacts include parts of Southampton, Isle of Wight, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and nearby coastal plain communities. Travel issues are expected to remain minor overall, but drivers may encounter slick spots late tonight and during the early morning commute.
Residents are encouraged to use caution if traveling overnight, slow down on wet or icy roads, and monitor updated statements from the National Weather Service. Any snow should taper off by early Thursday, with conditions improving as the morning progresses.
