Wakefield, Virginia – Snow is expected across portions of eastern Virginia and the eastern shore of Maryland today as rain transitions to a rain-snow mix or all snow this afternoon into the early evening, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

In a Sunday morning update, the National Weather Service said there is moderate to high confidence that many areas will see at least some snow today. Rain early this morning is expected to gradually change to snow as temperatures cool, with snow activity tapering off after 10 PM.

Forecasters emphasized that this system remains particularly tricky, as temperatures are expected to hover near or just above freezing, limiting how efficiently snow can accumulate. As a result, most snow accumulation is expected on grassy and elevated surfaces, rather than widespread roadway coverage.

The current forecast calls for 1 to 2 inches of snow from just northeast of Richmond into the Northern Neck of Virginia and the Maryland Eastern Shore. Elsewhere, including much of eastern Virginia and coastal North Carolina, snowfall amounts are expected to range from 0.5 to 1 inch, with lower totals along the immediate North Carolina coast.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect today for portions of the Northern Neck and Maryland Eastern Shore from 10 AM through 10 PM Sunday. While temperatures are marginal, the National Weather Service cautioned that brief periods of heavier snow could allow for some accumulation on roadways in isolated locations.

Officials urge residents to remain alert for changing conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening hours, and to continue monitoring forecast updates as the event unfolds.
