Massachusetts begins Monday with biting cold gripping the region as breath hangs in the air and pavement stays stiff under sub-freezing temperatures. Sunshine fades quickly this afternoon as clouds thicken, signaling the next round of Winter Weather for the Boston suburbs.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, snow develops later today and becomes more widespread this evening. Temperatures stay below freezing, allowing snow to stick easily. Accumulations remain light during the day, but totals of one to two inches are possible by early Tuesday morning, especially north and west of Boston.

Wakefield drivers should prepare for worsening travel late today. Slushy buildup is expected along I-95, Route 128, and local neighborhood roads during the evening commute. School traffic and after-work travel may be slowed as snow intensifies.

Tonight brings added concern. Snow mixes with freezing rain toward early Tuesday, particularly after midnight. Even a thin glaze can create dangerous driving conditions. Black ice may form quickly where pavement temperatures remain below freezing.

Tuesday turns milder but messy. Highs reach the upper 30s, allowing precipitation to change to rain by afternoon. Roads improve gradually, though puddles and reduced visibility persist. Showers continue into Tuesday night with temperatures hovering near freezing.

By Wednesday, rain lingers early before tapering. Skies brighten later, and highs climb into the low 40s. Thursday offers a welcome break with sunshine and calmer conditions. Another system approaches Friday with additional rain chances as temperatures rise toward 50.

Meteorologists stress that timing matters today. Conditions deteriorate quickly after sunset. Extra caution is advised for evening travel as Winter Weather tightens its grip on the first full week of January 2026.
