WAHOO, Neb. – An urgent Freeze Warning has been issued for Butler and Saunders Counties from midnight tonight until 10 a.m. CDT Thursday, as temperatures are expected to fall to around 27 degrees, marking one of the coldest nights so far this fall. The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley warns the subfreezing temperatures could damage unprotected pipes, crops, and tender plants across eastern Nebraska, including the cities of Wahoo, Ashland, David City, and Yutan.

According to the National Weather Service, clear skies and calm winds behind a passing cold front will allow heat to escape quickly after sunset. That will send temperatures tumbling well below freezing by early Thursday morning. The combination of dry air and light winds will make for a crisp but potentially damaging chill across rural areas and low-lying fields.

Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants, drain and wrap outdoor pipes, and let indoor faucets drip slowly overnight to avoid costly freeze damage. Pet owners should make sure animals have warm, dry shelter through early Thursday morning. The cold stretch will likely end the growing season for much of Butler and Saunders Counties.

According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, early-morning frost could cause slick spots on bridges and overpasses, particularly along Highways 92, 109, and I-80 near Ashland, where road surfaces cool fastest. Commuters are advised to use caution and allow extra travel time during the morning drive.

Temperatures are expected to rebound slightly Thursday afternoon but stay cooler than normal through the weekend, with another shot of cold air possible early next week.
