Blacksburg, VA — Extreme winter weather is set to grip Virginia as a wintry mix turns to snow Sunday, followed by dangerously cold conditions into next week. Residents west of the Blue Ridge Mountains are advised to prepare for temperatures plummeting below zero, with wind chills reaching -20°F in higher elevations.

According to the National Weather Service, the extreme cold watch will take effect Sunday night and remain in place through Wednesday morning. Light snowfall between 2 to 4 inches is expected in the New River Valley, with up to 7 inches in western Greenbrier. Roads, including portions of I-81, may become treacherous due to snow and freezing rain Sunday afternoon.

Cold winds will peak Monday night, when frostbite and hypothermia become significant risks. Single-digit highs are forecast for Tuesday, with nighttime lows dropping to 4°F. Those venturing outdoors should layer up with insulated clothing and protect exposed skin.

By Wednesday, conditions improve slightly, with sunny skies and highs near 21°F expected. However, officials urge vigilance as pipes may freeze, and icy patches could linger. Local authorities recommend dripping faucets to prevent damage and checking on vulnerable neighbors.

Looking ahead, milder weather could return by late week, but additional snow showers are possible. Stay updated through the National Weather Service or local alerts for any changes.
