Richmond, VA – A significant winter storm is set to impact central and southeastern Virginia, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, and ice that will create hazardous road conditions and potential power outages through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from Tuesday at 8 a.m. to Wednesday at 1 p.m. for areas including Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, and Prince Edward counties. Snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 7 inches are expected, with up to three-tenths of an inch of ice forming on roads, bridges, and power lines.
Motorists are advised to avoid travel if possible, as icy conditions could make roads extremely slick, especially during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) urges drivers to use extreme caution, leave extra following distance, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration.
Residents should prepare for potential widespread power outages due to ice accumulation on tree limbs and power lines. If traveling, authorities recommend carrying an emergency kit with food, water, and a flashlight.
For updated road conditions, travelers can call 511 or visit VDOT’s website.
