Virginia Beach, VA – A rough start to the week is in store for Virginia Beach as thunderstorms and dangerous rip currents grip the coast this Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until Monday evening for Virginia Beach and Eastern Currituck County, NC. Breaking waves of 3 to 4 feet and high-period swells are expected to create life-threatening rip currents throughout the day. Swimmers are strongly advised to stay out of the water.

By late morning Monday, isolated thunderstorms will build along the coast. Showers are likely between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with additional storms possible into the evening. Winds will increase from the south at 10 to 14 mph, gusting as high as 22 mph. This weather combo may make local roads like U.S. Route 60 slick and hazardous, particularly near the Oceanfront.

Showers will persist into Monday night, with a chance of thunder continuing past sunset. Rainfall totals remain under a tenth of an inch—unless thunderstorm activity intensifies.

Visitors and residents should monitor NOAA Weather Radio or check weather.gov for updates. Avoid ocean activities, charge mobile devices in case of power outages, and prepare for sudden downpours.
