Blacksburg, VA – Frigid conditions continue across southwest Virginia as a cold weather advisory remains in effect through noon today. Wind chills as low as 14 below zero are expected, creating a heightened risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in the Blacksburg area will only reach 24 degrees this afternoon. Tonight, lows are forecast to drop into the single digits, with calm winds offering slight relief. Residents along the I-81 corridor, including Pulaski and Roanoke, are advised to limit outdoor activity and wear proper winter clothing.

The extended forecast shows a gradual warm-up. Thursday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs near 33, but lows will fall to 19 overnight. Friday offers similar conditions, with a high of 31 degrees and lows around 12. Saturday’s forecast includes sunny skies and a high near 40, a noticeable improvement for the region.

Caution is urged for anyone traveling during the advisory, as frostbite can occur within minutes in extreme wind chills. Black ice remains a concern on untreated roads, particularly along I-81 and local highways. Keep pets indoors and check on vulnerable neighbors.
