Detroit, MI – Southeast Michigan residents should prepare for snow and icy conditions beginning tonight, with effects lasting into Thursday morning. Wind chills as low as -18°F are expected early today, creating hazardous conditions before snow accumulates overnight.
According to the National Weather Service, light snow is expected to begin tonight across the region, including areas along I-69 and metro Detroit. Accumulation is expected to range between a half-inch and two inches by Thursday afternoon, with isolated higher amounts possible in northern areas. Roads may become slippery during the Thursday morning commute, especially in untreated areas. Drivers are urged to use caution and allow extra travel time.
Wind chills, already dangerously low this morning, will ease slightly Thursday as temperatures rise into the mid-20s. However, gusts up to 30 mph will reduce visibility during snowfall. Conditions are expected to improve Thursday afternoon as snow diminishes to flurries, with clear skies and drier weather forecast through Friday.
Looking ahead, Friday’s high will reach 21°F with mostly sunny skies. The warming trend continues into the weekend, with Saturday expected to bring highs near 30°F. Sunday and Monday are forecast to stay mostly sunny, with temperatures reaching the upper 20s to low 30s.
Residents should dress in layers, wear gloves and hats, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme cold. Frequent checks on vulnerable family members and neighbors are encouraged, and caution is advised when using space heaters.
