Blacksburg, VA – Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact Virginia Saturday afternoon through the evening, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and flooding. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), storms will develop over the mountains and foothills and organize into a line crossing the Piedmont from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wind gusts of over 60 mph are possible, and hail larger than quarter-sized could occur.
Additional showers and thunderstorms will move from west to east overnight, heightening the risk of flooding. The NWS urges residents to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
In particular, urban areas and small creeks could see localized flooding, with the potential for rapid rises in water levels. The primary concern remains severe winds, but residents should be prepared for sudden weather changes and possible road closures due to flash flooding.
This storm system will impact areas across Virginia, including the central and western regions, through the evening hours. Stay alert, and avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storms. Further advisories may be issued as the storm progresses.
