Blacksburg, Virginia – Cloudy skies, cool temperatures and increasing rain chances will dominate Southwest Virginia today, with the highest likelihood for showers and a few thunderstorms arriving this evening and continuing into tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a stalled front south of the region and an approaching area of low pressure will keep temperatures well below late-July averages. Morning drizzle will gradually give way to scattered showers and a few thunderstorms this afternoon before more widespread rainfall develops tonight.
Afternoon highs will range from 66 to 80 degrees, while overnight lows settle between 58 and 64 degrees. Communities including Blacksburg, Roanoke, Christiansburg, Lynchburg, Danville, Wytheville and surrounding areas should expect mostly cloudy to overcast skies throughout the day, with the greatest rain coverage expected after sunset.
While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, heavier downpours could briefly reduce visibility on Interstates 81, 77 and 64, especially during the evening commute. Drivers should slow down on wet roads and allow extra travel time as showers become more numerous.
Rain chances decrease somewhat on Saturday, although isolated showers remain possible as a gradual warming trend begins through the weekend and into early next week.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring today’s system, and additional advisories may be issued if thunderstorms become stronger or rainfall coverage increases.
