Richmond, VA – Warm, sunny skies across Virginia Saturday will shift dramatically by Sunday evening, as forecasters warn of potential flash flooding tied to heavy rainfall moving through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, VA, a slow-moving cold front is expected to trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms beginning Sunday afternoon, intensifying into the night and continuing through Monday, April 7. Most of south-central and southeast Virginia, along with northeast North Carolina, has been placed under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for excessive rainfall.
Localized downpours could lead to flash flooding, particularly in urban zones or flood-prone areas such as Richmond, Emporia, and South Hill. The greatest rainfall threat is forecast from late Sunday through early Monday, with potential flood impacts extending into the morning commute hours.
Residents are urged to monitor alerts and avoid low-lying areas during heavy rain. If driving, never attempt to cross flooded roadways. While Saturday’s highs will climb into the mid-to-upper 80s with clearing skies, conditions will become increasingly humid ahead of the storm system.
Rain chances diminish Monday evening, but saturated soils could prolong minor flood issues in vulnerable locations. Stay tuned to local forecasts for real-time updates.
