Caribou, ME – A wintry mix will sweep across Maine late Saturday, creating hazardous travel conditions from the Central Highlands to the Crown of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 5 p.m. Saturday through 6 a.m. Sunday for areas including Moosehead Lake, Baxter State Park, and extending north toward the Canada border. Snow will begin this evening before transitioning to sleet and freezing rain overnight, particularly in northern regions.

In cities like Caribou, Ashland, and Allagash, snow totals of 2–4 inches are expected before a shift to sleet and freezing rain. In the Central Highlands and Downeast regions, including Bangor and Dover-Foxcroft, the mix will quickly change to rain, limiting snow totals but increasing the risk of icy spots through the evening hours.

Light glaze from freezing rain may reach up to one-tenth of an inch in interior areas, potentially affecting roads along Route 9 and higher elevations.

Residents are urged to drive with caution and delay unnecessary travel until conditions improve Sunday morning. Temperatures will rise into the 40s by midday Sunday, ending precipitation as light rain showers and bringing improved road conditions by afternoon.
