Blacksburg, VA – Dense fog blanketed parts of Virginia this morning, creating hazardous driving conditions along major routes, including I-81 and I-77. The fog, coupled with light rain expected later today, could reduce visibility to a few hundred feet at times, especially in the New River Valley and across mountain regions.

The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement early Wednesday, advising drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain a safe following distance. Rain showers will move in by this afternoon and continue into the evening, potentially impacting commutes.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s high will reach around 61°F before temperatures drop overnight to 34°F. Thursday will bring cooler and drier conditions with sunny skies and a high near 45°F, offering a brief break from the wet weather.

By Friday, another system will move into the area, bringing rain showers in the afternoon and a slight chance of snow showers for higher elevations later that night. Friday’s high is expected to hover around 42°F before dropping to 22°F overnight.

Looking ahead, the weekend ushers in much colder conditions. Saturday will see partly sunny skies with highs near 30°F and lows plummeting to 16°F. Sunday offers a sunnier outlook, with temperatures rising slightly to 34°F during the day.

Residents traveling through the region should remain alert to changing road conditions, especially during the dense fog this morning and as colder temperatures settle in over the weekend.
