Grand Rapids, MI – Snow showers are expected to impact parts of West Michigan starting Thursday morning, bringing accumulating snowfall and the potential for hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow is likely to begin Thursday afternoon and intensify into Thursday night. Accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with localized totals reaching up to 4 inches by Friday morning. Slick roads and reduced visibility could impact travel along major routes, including US-131 and I-96 near Grand Rapids. Drivers should exercise caution, especially during the evening commute Thursday and early Friday.
Winds will accompany the snowfall, with northwest gusts reaching 20-25 mph. Combined with temperatures in the low 30s, wind chills will make conditions feel significantly colder.
Looking ahead, snow showers will linger through Friday, with daytime highs near 32°F. By Friday night, skies will clear slightly as temperatures dip into the teens. Saturday is expected to be partly sunny but bitterly cold, with highs only reaching 26°F and overnight lows falling into the single digits.
Residents are urged to plan for slow travel, allow extra time during commutes, and stay updated on road conditions. Snowplow crews are expected to be active during the storm, but untreated roads may remain slick.
The NWS also advises staying weather-aware, particularly for weekend travel. While snow amounts may not be significant, intermittent bursts of snow combined with strong winds could still cause visibility issues.
