Richmond, VA – Virginia State Police are urging motorists to plan ahead and drive safely as millions are expected to travel during the Fourth of July holiday, prompting increased enforcement across the Commonwealth.
According to the Virginia State Police, this year’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, combined with the Independence Day holiday falling on a Saturday, is expected to bring especially heavy traffic as people travel for celebrations, vacations, and fireworks displays.
AAA Mid-Atlantic estimates that more than 2 million Virginians will travel more than 50 miles from home, with most using Virginia’s interstate highways and primary roadways.
As of Tuesday, June 30, preliminary statistics show 307 traffic fatalities have occurred on Virginia roadways this year.
State police said troopers will participate in Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (C.A.R.E.), a nationwide traffic safety initiative aimed at reducing crashes caused by speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and seat belt violations.
The Fourth of July holiday enforcement period begins at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, July 2, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 5. Officials said motorists should expect an increased law enforcement presence, particularly on Thursday, July 2, and Sunday, July 5, which are expected to be the busiest travel days.
Police are encouraging drivers to slow down, avoid distractions, wear seat belts, and never drive impaired. Those planning to drink are urged to arrange a designated driver, rideshare, taxi, or public transportation before heading to celebrations.
During last year’s Operation C.A.R.E. campaign, Virginia State Police cited 2,959 drivers for speeding, 1,411 for reckless driving, and arrested 73 impaired drivers. Troopers also investigated 879 crashes, assisted 701 stranded motorists, and recorded 11 traffic fatalities during the holiday period.
Officials hope drivers make safety a priority so everyone can enjoy a safe Independence Day weekend.
