Blacksburg, Virginia – Scorching heat and stormy skies are on tap for Wednesday in southwest Virginia, as the summer pattern tightens its grip on the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, heat index values may soar into the upper 90s by mid-afternoon Wednesday, followed by isolated thunderstorms developing after 4 p.m. Residents in Montgomery County and along US-460 should plan for slowed traffic, sudden downpours, and possible ponding on roads.

Blacksburg will hit a high near 92°F Wednesday under mostly sunny skies, but calm winds and high humidity will make it feel several degrees hotter. Thunderstorm chances rise in the evening with brief heavy rainfall and lightning possible. Though severe storms aren’t expected, outdoor plans and afternoon commutes could be disrupted.

The heat won’t ease much in the days ahead. Thursday brings more of the same — highs near 90°F with storm chances after 2 p.m. Friday’s forecast includes scattered afternoon thunderstorms again, with slightly cooler highs in the upper 80s.
