Virginia weather is turning increasingly tropical along the coast this afternoon as gray skies, humid air and developing thunderstorms spread across Virginia Beach. Waves rolled against a rough Atlantic shoreline late this morning while damp roads and low clouds slowed traffic near Pacific Avenue and Interstate 264. Conditions may deteriorate quickly by midafternoon as heavier showers and lightning move inland from the coast.
According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread through the afternoon and evening with highs climbing near 75 degrees around Oceana Naval Air Station. Rainfall totals between a quarter and half inch are possible today, with locally higher amounts under stronger storms. A Beach Hazards Statement also remains in effect into this evening as rough surf and dangerous rip currents continue along the Atlantic beaches.
Meteorologists are now tracking a prolonged wet pattern through at least Wednesday. Temperatures rise sharply from the middle 70s today into the upper 80s by midweek across Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Chesapeake. That warmer air will also fuel additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms each afternoon and evening.
Drivers should allow extra time during heavier rain bursts. Ponding water may develop quickly along I-64, Shore Drive and low-lying streets near the oceanfront. Lightning could also interrupt beach plans and outdoor Memorial Day gatherings with little warning. Keep phones charged and monitor radar frequently before heading outside.
The broader Mid-Atlantic remains trapped in an active spring weather pattern through Memorial Day, with repeated storms stretching from the Gulf Coast into the Northeast. While widespread severe weather is not expected near Hampton Roads, isolated stronger storms could still produce gusty winds and small hail.
Long-range outlooks continue favoring above-normal temperatures heading into early June, signaling stronger summer heat and humidity settling into coastal Virginia next week.
