Virginia – Darkening skies could quickly replace this morning’s calm across southern Virginia as thunderstorms build through the afternoon. Roads may become slick in minutes, and a few storms could produce damaging wind gusts before the evening commute ends.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop around midday and continue through the afternoon and evening, mainly across southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The greatest window for stronger storms is from noon until about 8 p.m.
Forecasters say a few storms may become strong to severe, with wind gusts between 45 and 60 mph capable of bringing down tree limbs and causing isolated power outages. Large hail and tornadoes are not expected to be widespread threats, but heavy downpours could lead to scattered instances of localized flooding, especially in poor-drainage and low-lying areas.
Communities including Emporia, South Hill, Franklin, Suffolk, Chesapeake, and areas toward Elizabeth City, North Carolina, should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Drivers along Interstate 64, Interstate 95, U.S. 58, and U.S. 17 may encounter reduced visibility and water-covered roads during heavier showers.
If thunderstorms approach, move indoor activities inside and avoid flooded roadways. Even brief bursts of rain can create hazardous driving conditions during the afternoon commute.
Storms are expected to move east-southeast at 20 to 25 mph, with the strongest activity shifting toward the coast by evening. Additional updates or warnings may be issued if storms intensify.
