Norfolk, VA – A U.S. Navy sailor reported missing late last month was found deceased in a wooded area near Naval Station Norfolk, and another sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement in connection with the case.
According to a statement released Monday by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), the Norfolk Medical Examiner confirmed the identity of the deceased as Seaman Angelina Resendiz. She had last been seen on May 29 aboard Naval Station Norfolk and was the subject of a missing person alert issued by NCIS.
NCIS officials said a Navy Sailor, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, is currently held in pretrial confinement as charges are pending under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The statement emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that further details are being withheld to protect the integrity of the process.
Authorities from the Norfolk Police Department, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Search and Rescue joined NCIS in the search and investigation. Officials say they are continuing to follow leads to understand the events leading to Resendiz’s death and ensure justice is served.
Resendiz, 21, was assigned to the USS James E. Williams (DDG 95). A missing person bulletin had noted she may have been carrying a black and purple backpack when last seen. Her disappearance prompted an intensive multi-agency effort over the past two weeks.
As of Tuesday, NCIS has not disclosed the cause of death or possible motives involved. Additional information is expected as the investigation progresses.
