Wakefield, VA – Virginia residents could face a busy hurricane season this year, with as many as 18 named storms and up to five major hurricanes possible through November.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, the Atlantic basin is forecast to see 13 to 18 named storms, 5 to 9 hurricanes, and 2 to 5 major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher) during the 2025 season. Experts say warm ocean waters, favorable wind patterns, and a stronger West African monsoon are fueling the outlook. An ENSO-neutral pattern means La Niña could develop later, making conditions even more supportive for powerful storms.

Eastern Virginia, including Hampton Roads, Norfolk, and Richmond, should stay alert for tropical activity that could lead to flooding, downed trees, and prolonged power outages. Emergency management officials urge families to review their hurricane plans, gather supplies, and pay close attention to all watches or warnings issued for their area.

The risk for hurricanes and tropical storms will last through late fall, with updates likely as weather patterns shift. Additional advisories are possible if Atlantic conditions become even more active.
