Loudoun County, VA – As holiday shopping ramps up this Christmas season, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) is reminding the public that shoplifting can carry severe criminal penalties in Virginia.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, retail theft under $1,000 is considered a Class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. Theft exceeding $1,000 is classified as felony grand larceny, with potential prison sentences of up to 20 years.

Authorities are urging both shoppers and retail workers to stay alert during the busy holiday shopping rush, when thefts typically increase. “Stay safe – do not confront suspects,” the department stated. Instead, officials advise noting suspect descriptions, recording vehicle information when possible, and preserving surveillance footage.

Reports of retail theft can be made by calling 703-777-1021 for non-emergency cases, or 911 if a crime is in progress.

The Sheriff’s Office stressed that avoiding confrontation is key. “Do not confront suspects,” the department reiterated in its alert.

With Christmas shopping season in full swing, law enforcement is highlighting the long-term consequences of shoplifting. “Don’t risk your future,” the Sheriff’s Office warned, reminding residents that what may seem like a small act can result in a lifelong criminal record.
