Richmond, Va. – Virginia residents are facing life-threatening heat through Wednesday as an Excessive Heat Warning blankets much of the state, with heat index values expected to soar past 110° in multiple counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, today marks the hottest stretch of the week, and the warning remains in effect through Wednesday evening. Central and southeastern areas—including Richmond, Williamsburg, and Elizabeth City—are most at risk, while parts of Maryland beaches and the northern Outer Banks fall under a lesser Heat Advisory with heat indices of 105–109°.

Counties such as Henrico, Chesterfield, and Suffolk are under the most severe warning. Health officials urge residents to avoid strenuous activity outdoors, wear lightweight clothing, and remain in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Power grid strain and elevated cooling demands could stress utilities in urban corridors.

Drivers are reminded never to leave pets or children in parked cars. Residents are also encouraged to check on neighbors and the elderly, and to ensure outdoor animals have access to water and shade.

Extreme heat conditions are expected to persist until Wednesday night, with additional advisories possible if the heat lingers into late week.
