Raleigh, N.C. – An oppressive heat wave is gripping central North Carolina, with heat index values soaring to 115°F through 8 p.m. Wednesday, prompting officials to issue an Extreme Heat Warning for Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the warning affects much of the central region, while western counties remain under a Heat Advisory. The brutal heat is expected to persist throughout the week, increasing risks for heat-related illness, especially for vulnerable populations without access to air conditioning.

Counties under the warning include Wake, Cumberland, Durham, Johnston, and Wayne, where residents are urged to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors. Western counties like Guilford and Forsyth, while slightly cooler, still face dangerous conditions under the advisory.

The National Weather Service warns that the hottest part of the day — typically between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. — will be the most dangerous. Schools, daycares, and outdoor workers should take added precautions. Cooling centers may be available locally, and residents are encouraged to monitor local government resources for assistance.

Heat alerts remain in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday, and additional advisories could be issued if the high temperatures continue beyond midweek.
