Washington, D.C. – Residents across the D.C. metro area should brace for possible flash flooding Friday evening as a slow-moving storm system brings heavy rain to Maryland and northern Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Saturday for the District of Columbia, much of central Maryland, and northern Virginia. Forecasters say 2 to 3 inches of rain are likely, with some areas nearing 4 inches, especially where storms train over the same location.

The highest risk zones include Prince George’s, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel counties in Maryland, as well as Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties in Virginia. Urban areas with poor drainage, such as downtown D.C., Alexandria, and Manassas, may experience flash flooding. Roads like I-95, I-66, and the Capital Beltway could become hazardous.

Localized street flooding, creek overflows, and power disruptions are possible. Officials urge residents to avoid travel during heavy rain, clear gutters, and monitor alerts.

This is the first significant rainfall event of this magnitude in several weeks, increasing runoff potential.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until early Saturday morning. Flash Flood Warnings may follow if conditions worsen.
