Blacksburg, VA – Severe thunderstorms could rattle parts of Virginia and northern North Carolina Friday afternoon, with threats of damaging winds, large hail, and localized flash flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in effect Friday for areas stretching from central and southwest Virginia into north central North Carolina. Storms are expected to develop after 2 p.m., with the strongest activity possible between 4 and 8 p.m. An isolated tornado can’t be ruled out during peak hours.

Counties under threat include Montgomery, Roanoke, Franklin, Bedford, Rockbridge, and Pittsylvania in Virginia, as well as Yadkin, Surry, and Rockingham in North Carolina. Heavy downpours could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, and poor drainage zones. Wind gusts may exceed 30 mph.

Drivers should expect reduced visibility, especially during the evening commute. Power outages are also possible where trees or lines are brought down by gusts or hail. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and charge devices ahead of time.

Spotter reports are encouraged Friday evening, especially for hail and wind damage. Additional updates are expected as the storm system develops.
