Blacksburg, VA – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for portions of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia, with wind chills expected to drop as low as 23 degrees below zero by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), impacted areas include Watauga and Ashe counties in North Carolina, Grayson and Bath counties in Virginia, and western Greenbrier County in West Virginia. A cold weather advisory is also in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday for wind chills near 12 below zero.
The dangerously cold temperatures could cause frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes and significantly increase the risk of hypothermia. Residents are urged to wear layers, including hats, face masks, and gloves, and limit outdoor activities during this period.
Pets and livestock should be sheltered, with access to food and unfrozen water. Homeowners should take precautions to prevent frozen water pipes, such as wrapping or allowing faucets to drip.
The extreme cold is expected to persist through noon Wednesday. Residents should stay updated on weather alerts and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members. Use heating devices cautiously and avoid operating generators or grills indoors.
