Norfolk, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Gale Warning for the Virginia coastal waters, where strong southwest winds and high seas are expected to create hazardous marine conditions this afternoon and evening.

The warning is in effect from 1 p.m. Wednesday until 1 a.m. Thursday, affecting waters from Fenwick Island, Delaware, south to Cape Charles, Virginia, extending 20 nautical miles offshore. Forecasters expect winds of 20 to 30 knots, with gusts up to 40 knots and seas between 5 and 8 feet.

The strongest winds are expected late this afternoon and evening as a cold front sweeps across the Mid-Atlantic coast. The NWS warns that these gale-force winds and rough seas could capsize or damage vessels, particularly smaller craft, and cause significant visibility reduction in spray and high waves.

Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port, secure equipment, and avoid open waters until conditions improve early Thursday morning.

Winds and seas are forecast to gradually subside before sunrise Thursday as the front moves offshore.
