Blacksburg, VA – Snow and icy conditions are expected to create hazardous travel across parts of Virginia this weekend, impacting major roadways like Interstate 81. A wintry mix is forecast to arrive late Sunday, extending into Monday, with snow showers possible as early as Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, light snow will begin Friday morning in western Virginia, with accumulations of 1-2 inches in elevated areas. Widespread impacts are anticipated Sunday night into Monday morning as snow, sleet, and freezing rain develop. Travel could become hazardous, especially on untreated surfaces and bridges. Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra travel time.

Friday’s high temperature is expected to reach 38°F, with snow tapering off by mid-afternoon. Saturday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs near 40°F, providing a brief reprieve before Sunday’s storm. Beginning late Sunday afternoon, a wintry mix will spread across the region, with precipitation continuing into Monday. Roads may become slick, particularly along I-81 and secondary routes.

Sunday’s high will be near 34°F, with lows dipping into the upper 20s. Precipitation is forecast to transition between snow, sleet, and freezing rain overnight into Monday, increasing the likelihood of icy conditions during Monday’s commute.

Residents should monitor local forecasts and prepare for possible power outages due to ice accumulation. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and avoid non-essential travel during peak storm hours. Updates will be provided as the system develops.
