Virginia Beach, Va. – Tropical storm conditions are expected to intensify across coastal Virginia through Thursday as high surf, flooding, and damaging winds threaten communities from Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Tropical Storm Watch, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Watch remain in effect. Winds along the coast could reach 40 mph by Thursday, with dangerous surf and rip currents continuing into late week. Rain chances climb to 70% Thursday, with heavy downpours likely during the afternoon and evening.

Emergency managers are warning residents in low-lying areas to prepare for coastal flooding during high tide cycles, particularly near Back Bay, Lynnhaven, and the southern Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Travel along Shore Drive, General Booth Boulevard, and other flood-prone roads may be hazardous during peak rainfall.

The combination of strong winds and saturated ground could also bring scattered power outages. Officials advise charging devices, securing outdoor furniture, and avoiding non-essential travel when winds strengthen Thursday. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the surf until advisories are lifted.

Conditions begin to improve Friday, with skies clearing and highs near 79. However, warnings remain in effect until Thursday evening, and more advisories could be issued if storm tracks shift closer to shore.
