Vigo County, IN – An early-morning police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended in a crash Saturday, sending five juveniles to local hospitals and prompting multiple charges, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff’s office, just before 5 a.m. Saturday, December 27, deputies received a report that a 14-year-old male had allegedly stolen a vehicle overnight. The vehicle information was shared with Terre Haute City Police and Sullivan County authorities after the teen’s mother believed he was headed toward Sullivan to meet a friend.
Officers with the Terre Haute City Police Department located the vehicle near State Road 46 and State Road 42. When police attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle allegedly fled. That pursuit was terminated after officers lost sight of the vehicle near 1st Street and Hulman.
A short time later, Sullivan County deputies located the same vehicle and initiated a second pursuit. Authorities say the vehicle traveled north on State Road 63 back into Vigo County, where Vigo County deputies assisted.
The pursuit ended when the driver allegedly attempted a high-speed right turn onto Rigney Drive, drove through a guardrail, and crashed into a tree.
Deputies later discovered the vehicle was occupied by five juveniles. Three of the five were reported as runaways. All five were transported to local hospitals with complaints of pain. Officials confirmed no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Charges stemming from the incident include vehicle theft and runaway allegations against a 14-year-old male, as well as runaway and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle. Other juveniles involved included a 14-year-old female and a 12-year-old female, both of whom were released to guardians, according to authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
