Burlington, VT – A mix of rain, snow, and gusty winds will create hazardous travel conditions across Vermont beginning Tuesday night. Forecasters warn residents to prepare for slick roads, reduced visibility, and possible power outages as winter weather intensifies.
According to the National Weather Service, rain is expected to begin Tuesday evening, with temperatures dropping sharply overnight. By New Year’s Day, a rain-snow mix is likely to coat roadways, particularly along I-89 and U.S. Route 7, making holiday travel risky. Gusts as high as 38 mph will accompany precipitation, increasing the chance of tree damage and scattered outages.
Tuesday will see partly sunny skies during the day with a high near 43°F before rain begins late in the evening. Rain is expected to transition into a rain-snow mix by Wednesday morning, with a high near 35°F. Travelers are advised to monitor conditions and allow extra time for commutes, especially on untreated roads.
Looking ahead, Thursday’s forecast includes snow showers and breezy conditions, with gusts reaching 40 mph. Temperatures will drop further, with a low near 24°F Thursday night. By Friday and Saturday, conditions will stabilize slightly, though highs will remain in the mid-20s with mostly cloudy skies.
Residents should secure outdoor decorations and prepare for potential disruptions. Check local forecasts regularly for updates and consider delaying travel until roads are treated.
