Vermont – The cold already feels heavier this morning, clinging to skin and biting exposed hands. Light flakes drift at times, pavement looks dull and gray, and a far more dangerous surge of Arctic air is lining up for the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon for northern, central, and south-central Vermont, along with the Champlain Valley of New York. Wind chills could plunge as low as 30 degrees below zero, levels that can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Burlington and nearby communities, including South Burlington, Winooski, and Colchester, will see scattered snow showers continue into Friday. Highs reach the mid-20s before temperatures drop sharply Friday night. Snow showers become more likely late Friday, with light accumulation possible before winds strengthen.

Saturday turns harsh quickly. Highs hover near 9 degrees, but gusty northwest winds drive wind chills well below zero. Roads that briefly improve during daylight may refreeze fast, increasing the risk of slick travel on Route 7, I-89, and untreated side streets. Saturday night brings the coldest air, with lows near 8 below and stronger gusts pushing wind chills toward dangerous levels.

Sunday stays bitterly cold despite some sun. Highs reach only the single digits, and wind chills remain below zero into the afternoon. Limit time outdoors, dress in layers with face protection, and keep pets inside. Check heating systems and protect exposed pipes.

Looking ahead, moderation appears possible early next week. NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook shows above-normal temperatures expanding east, hinting at a gradual thaw after this Arctic blast.
