Vermont greets the morning with crisp air and pale blue skies, but changes are already lining up to the west. Clouds thicken over Lake Champlain, and snow develops later today in Burlington, setting the stage for slick travel by evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a 30 percent chance of snow begins after 4 p.m. Highs reach near 37 degrees, with south winds 11 to 14 mph and gusts up to 28 mph. Light accumulation is possible before precipitation tapers.
Snow becomes steadier this evening, and a brief period of wintry mix or freezing drizzle could develop as temperatures dip toward 26 degrees. Less than one inch of new snow is expected, but even light coatings can turn I-89, Route 7, and neighborhood hills slippery. Plan extra time if heading out after sunset.
By Wednesday, skies clear and sunshine returns. Highs rebound to near 43 degrees, melting what falls today. That thaw may create wet pavement by afternoon, followed by refreezing late at night. This is prime flash-freeze season across northern Vermont.
Thursday stays partly sunny with highs near 40. Another round of mixed rain and snow arrives Thursday night into Friday, when highs reach the low 40s. By the weekend, milder air pushes in. Saturday climbs near 52 degrees with rain likely, and Sunday turns partly sunny near 49.
We spring clocks ahead at 2 a.m. Sunday, March 8. Longer daylight and signs of warming up dominate the 6- to 10-day outlook, with above-normal temperatures possible into early next week.
