Burlington, VT – Heavy rain and rapid snowmelt are expected to cause flooding across Vermont, New York, and parts of Connecticut starting Wednesday afternoon, prompting Flood Watches throughout the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the Flood Watch will take effect at 1 p.m. Wednesday and remain in place through Thursday morning. The combination of 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain and melting snow may lead to flooding of rivers, creeks, and streams, as well as urban and low-lying areas. Officials warn that flash flooding and main-stem river flooding are possible in Vermont and Essex County, New York, as well as parts of northwestern Connecticut.

A separate Flood Watch has been issued for southern Vermont, western Massachusetts, and eastern New York, where rain totals may reach up to three inches in some areas. The National Weather Service noted that mild temperatures are contributing to snowmelt, further increasing the risk of flooding.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to remain alert for potential warnings and take precautions as necessary. Rainfall is expected to transition to snow early Thursday as temperatures drop.
