Wilmington, NC – A strong cold front moving across southeastern North Carolina today is expected to bring severe weather, including the risk of tornadoes. Residents in Wilmington and surrounding coastal areas are urged to remain vigilant as storms with gusts up to 45 mph are forecast.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the threat will peak between late morning and early afternoon. The heaviest rainfall and strongest winds will accompany these storms, which could produce isolated tornadoes. Affected areas include Wilmington, Brunswick County, and regions along the I-40 corridor.
In addition to tornado risks, winds outside thunderstorms may still reach 45 mph, potentially causing power outages and downed tree limbs. Residents should secure outdoor items, such as holiday decorations, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storms.
By Thursday, the weather is expected to clear, with sunny skies and highs in the mid-50s forecast. Friday and Saturday will bring calm conditions, with temperatures ranging from the 40s overnight to low 60s during the day.
However, the immediate focus remains on today’s severe weather. The NWS advises monitoring local updates and having a plan in case tornado warnings are issued. Spotter activation is not currently expected, but conditions may change rapidly.
