Burlington, VT – Residents should prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures as an arctic air mass settles across Vermont this weekend. Snow showers are likely Saturday, followed by a stretch of bitter cold lasting into next week.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington, today’s high near 29°F will mark the warmest day for the next seven days. Snow showers are expected to begin Saturday morning, with light accumulations under half an inch possible. Temperatures will remain around 20°F during the day, with wind gusts reaching 20 mph.

Saturday night will see lows plunge to 13°F, and conditions will grow colder from there. Sunday’s high is forecast near 18°F with mostly cloudy skies. By Monday, temperatures will dip further, with a high of just 11°F and overnight lows in the single digits. Wind chills may make it feel significantly colder, posing risks to those without proper winter gear.

Travelers along I-89 and other major roadways should anticipate icy conditions and plan accordingly. The NWS advises motorists to check forecasts before heading out and pack emergency supplies, including blankets and extra clothing.

As the cold intensifies early next week, Vermonters are urged to protect themselves and their homes. Keep water pipes insulated and pets indoors. The NWS warns that prolonged exposure to the cold can lead to frostbite or hypothermia.
