Salt Lake City, UT – A powerful winter storm is bringing widespread heavy snow across Utah’s mountains through early Sunday, with the National Weather Service warning of 1 to 3 feet of accumulation, dangerous travel, and likely traction restrictions across multiple ranges.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Sunday for the Wasatch Back, including Park City, Heber City, and Huntsville. Snow totals are expected to reach 6 to 16 inches above 5,500 feet, with 2 to 6 inches in lower elevations. Forecasters warn of difficult driving today and tonight, especially during Friday’s morning and evening commutes.

A second Winter Storm Warning covers the Western Uinta Mountains, Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs, and Central Mountains, also through 5 a.m. Sunday. These areas are forecast to receive 1 to 2 feet of snow, with 4 to 8 inches south of Manti. The NWS warns that Soldier Summit will see significant travel impacts as snowfall rates reach 1–2 inches per hour from Friday evening into Saturday morning.

A third warning includes the Wasatch Mountains north and south of I-80, affecting areas such as Logan Summit, Alta, Brighton, and Mantua. These zones are forecast to see 1 to 3 feet of snow, with even higher amounts possible in the Bear River Range and upper Cottonwoods. Blowing and drifting snow will contribute to very low visibility, especially near Logan Summit.

Drivers are urged to avoid mountain travel unless necessary and to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles. Utah road conditions can be found at udottraffic.utah.gov, with snowfall graphics available via weather.gov/slc/winter.
