Salt Lake City, UT – Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across Utah and southwest Wyoming Tuesday afternoon, bringing localized flash-flooding concerns and strong wind gusts during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, storms are expected to first develop over higher terrain Tuesday afternoon before gradually moving northward through the evening. Communities across northern, central and southern Utah could experience changing conditions as individual storms form and move through the region.

Forecasters said thunderstorms across central and southern Utah may produce heavy rainfall capable of causing isolated flash flooding. The risk could be especially important near flood-prone locations, low-lying roads, slot canyons and areas with poor drainage.

Across northern Utah, including communities near the Salt Lake City metro area, some thunderstorms could produce gusty outflow winds reaching up to 50 mph. Those winds may create difficult driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles, and could blow around unsecured outdoor objects.

Storm coverage is expected to remain widely scattered, meaning not every community will receive rain. However, conditions may change quickly where storms develop, with brief downpours, lightning and sudden wind shifts possible.

Drivers should avoid crossing flooded roads and allow additional travel time where heavy rain reduces visibility. Anyone spending time outdoors should move inside when thunder is heard and remain away from exposed ridges, open fields and bodies of water.

Residents across Utah and southwest Wyoming should continue monitoring local forecasts through Tuesday evening as storms move northward.
