Salt Lake City, UT – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy mountain snow to northern and central Utah, with hazardous travel expected through Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.
Forecasters say snowfall will intensify Friday afternoon and continue heavily at times through Saturday morning before gradually tapering off late Saturday night. The heaviest snow is expected in the upper Cottonwoods and Bear River Range, where totals could reach 2 to 3 feet by the end of the weekend.
Snowfall rates may exceed 1 to 2 inches per hour during the storm’s peak, significantly reducing visibility and making mountain travel extremely difficult. The NWS has issued a moderate (Level 2 of 4) weather risk for affected regions, indicating potentially significant mountain snow accumulations.
Travelers are urged to prepare for winter driving conditions, carry emergency supplies, and check for traction restrictions or closures before heading into higher elevations. The Utah Department of Transportation recommends postponing nonessential mountain travel until conditions improve.
This system is expected to ease Sunday morning, but lingering flurries and cold temperatures will keep roads slick across mountain passes.
