Salt Lake City, UT — A powerful cold front is expected to push through Utah beginning Thursday, bringing sharp temperature drops and accumulating snow that could disrupt travel through early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the front will move into northern Utah Thursday morning, reach central Utah by afternoon, and sweep into southern Utah by Thursday evening. The system will deliver mountain snowfall and a mix of rain and snow in valley areas. Temperatures are forecast to fall 20 to 25 degrees below Wednesday’s highs, with Friday’s daytime temperatures struggling to climb above freezing in many areas.

Snow levels will begin around 8,000 to 8,500 feet Thursday morning but are projected to drop significantly—to as low as 4,000 to 5,000 feet—by Thursday afternoon in the north and Friday morning in the south.

The storm could create hazardous conditions on high-elevation mountain routes, especially through Friday morning. Cities like Alta, the Western Uintas, and the Tushar Mountains could see several inches of snow, with accumulations reaching 4 to 10 inches in isolated areas.

Residents are advised to plan for delays and dress in layers as low temperatures near freezing will linger through Saturday morning across many valley communities.
