Salt Lake City, Utah – The air is warming quickly across the Wasatch Front, and another day of intense summer heat is taking hold. By early afternoon, temperatures will surge into the triple digits, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors before isolated thunderstorms begin developing later today.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon until midnight MDT Monday for the Salt Lake Valley, the northern Wasatch Front, Tooele and Rush Valleys, and portions of the Great Salt Lake Desert. Valley communities, including Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Sandy, Bountiful, Ogden and Brigham City, are expected to top 100 degrees this afternoon, while morning lows only fell into the 70s, offering little overnight cooling.
The hottest conditions are expected between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., when heat-related illnesses become more likely. If you’re traveling along Interstate 15, Interstate 80, Interstate 215 or SR-201, plan for extreme heat inside vehicles and on exposed pavement. Keep extra water in the car and avoid leaving children or pets unattended, even briefly.
Monday evening brings a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms, mainly after sunset. While many areas stay dry, any stronger cell could produce gusty winds, lightning and brief heavy rain. Storm chances increase Tuesday with a 50 percent chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms, followed by an even wetter pattern Wednesday as showers and thunderstorms become likely across northern Utah.
The broader western U.S. monsoon pattern continues to send moisture into the Great Basin through midweek, supporting daily thunderstorm development without eliminating the heat.
