Denver, Colo. – Sunshine is already heating sidewalks across the Front Range, and another scorching afternoon is quickly taking shape. Temperatures are racing toward the century mark while air quality concerns add another challenge for anyone spending time outside today.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. MDT Monday for Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Greeley and surrounding communities. Afternoon highs are expected to reach 100 degrees in Denver, with temperatures between 99 and 103 degrees across much of the advisory area.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment has also issued an Ozone Action Day Alert through 4 p.m. Monday for the Front Range Urban Corridor. Elevated ozone levels may affect sensitive groups, including children, older adults and anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Officials recommend limiting prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Drivers along Interstate 25, Interstate 70, U.S. 36 and E-470 should prepare for intense heat during the midday and evening commute. Vehicles can heat rapidly in direct sunshine, and pavement temperatures will run much hotter than the air.
A slight 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops Monday evening after 9 p.m., with isolated gusty winds possible. Tuesday brings another hot day near 94 degrees, but storm chances increase to 50 percent during the afternoon and evening. That more active pattern continues into Wednesday, when scattered thunderstorms could once again develop after midday.
Stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and schedule strenuous outdoor activities for the morning whenever possible. Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.
