SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A wave of October storms is crossing northern Utah this week, delivering soaking rain and a few rumbles of thunder before clearing skies arrive just in time for the weekend. The midweek system will also usher in cooler, crisper air as the Beehive State settles into classic fall weather.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue through Thursday morning, especially along I-15 from Ogden to Provo. Some heavier bursts of rain may briefly reduce visibility and cause slick spots during the Wednesday and Thursday commutes. Winds will stay generally light but could gust up to 20 mph in exposed valleys.

Conditions improve dramatically by Friday, when mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 60s return. The weekend looks ideal for outdoor events, fall hikes in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and late-season leaf viewing along the Wasatch Front. Saturday’s highs will hover near 64°F with cool, comfortable air dominating through Sunday.

By early next week, however, Utah’s next front could bring another round of moisture and a taste of early winter in the higher elevations. Some valley rain and mountain snow showers may return by Monday night or Tuesday, along with a chance of frost in colder valleys.

Residents should check drainage around yards and clear gutters ahead of Wednesday’s rainfall. The weekend that follows will deliver prime fall weather to enjoy before next week’s colder shift.
