Utah – Warm sun fades fast today as a sharp temperature drop sets the stage for a hard freeze tonight, putting crops and outdoor plumbing at risk across central and southern Utah.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 10 a.m. Thursday, with temperatures plunging as low as 25°F in areas like Delta, Milford, Cedar City, and Richfield . A Wind Advisory also remains in place through late afternoon for Castle Country, where gusts could reach 50 mph before colder air settles in.

Communities including Beaver, Fillmore, Nephi, Ephraim, and Salina will see the most widespread freeze impacts. In the Western Uinta Basin, including Roosevelt and Duchesne, temperatures may drop near 28°F—cold enough to damage early-season vegetation.

This is a classic spring “flash freeze” setup. Moisture from recent mild conditions can freeze quickly on surfaces overnight, potentially creating slick patches on bridges and rural roads early Thursday morning.

During the afternoon, strong winds will impact travel along US-6, I-70, and surrounding routes. High-profile vehicles should use caution, especially between Price and Green River, where crosswinds may be strongest.

Residents should act now. Cover sensitive plants, drain irrigation systems, and protect exposed pipes. Even a few hours below freezing can cause lasting damage this time of year.

Conditions improve Thursday afternoon as temperatures rebound into the 50s and 60s. A warming trend continues into Friday, signaling a return to more typical spring weather.
