El Paso, TX – A Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect through 2 p.m. Sunday for portions of southwest New Mexico, where strong winds and reduced visibility are creating hazardous driving conditions along Interstate 10 from the Arizona border to Lordsburg.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, visibility across the Lordsburg Playa area has dropped to between one-quarter and one mile, with localized whiteout conditions possible at times.
Officials warn that sudden drops in visibility may occur, particularly for drivers traveling east or west on I-10. Motorists are advised to slow down, avoid stopping on roadways, and, if caught in a dust storm, pull safely off the road, turn off lights, and keep your foot off the brake to avoid collisions.
The NWS also cautions that blowing dust may aggravate respiratory issues, and those with asthma or breathing conditions should remain indoors until the advisory expires. Conditions are expected to gradually improve by mid-afternoon as winds weaken.
