Albany, New York – Travel conditions are set to worsen across the southern Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley as light snow Thursday gives way to a powerful lake effect snow band expected to stall over parts of Upstate New York through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until early Thursday afternoon for northern Fulton, Hamilton, and northern Herkimer counties. An additional 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected before winds increase, creating slippery conditions for the Thursday morning commute, especially near Caroga Lake and along Route 10.

By Thursday afternoon, the situation escalates. A Lake Effect Snow Warning takes effect for Hamilton and northern Herkimer counties and continues through Friday evening. Snowfall totals of 8 to 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible north of Route 28 near Old Forge, Eagle Bay, and Big Moose. Blowing and drifting snow will sharply reduce visibility at times, making travel very difficult.

Snow showers are expected to consolidate into a persistent lake effect band later Thursday, remaining locked over the region into Friday before shifting south. Roads through the western Adirondacks, including Route 28 and Route 30, may become snow covered and hazardous.

Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible, allow extra time, and monitor updates closely. Warnings remain in effect through Friday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions intensify.
