Marquette, Michigan – Drivers across western and central Upper Michigan should prepare for deteriorating road conditions by 7 p.m. Tuesday as snow and light ice spread into the region ahead of the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 7 p.m. EST Tuesday through 7 p.m. EST Wednesday for Ontonagon, Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson, Menominee and southern Houghton counties. Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with locally up to 5 inches north of U.S. 2 in Ontonagon County. Ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch and wind gusts up to 35 mph could worsen travel conditions.
Roads including U.S. 2, U.S. 41 and M-28 may turn slick Tuesday evening, with blowing snow reducing visibility in open areas. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first, especially overnight into Wednesday morning.
Drivers should slow down, allow extra braking distance and consider delaying non-essential travel during peak snowfall. Keep phones charged in case isolated outages develop where ice builds on power lines.
Hazardous conditions are expected to impact both the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. The advisory remains in effect through Wednesday evening, and additional updates may follow if snow totals increase.
